What kinds of data exist and why?
In this session we explore the different kinds of data that get recorded and the reasons that people or machines make those records. We start with historical records, the value of making records and the value of reusing records for additional purposes.
We then look at the different types of data that get recorded, such as numbers, words, times and codes. This leads to grouping kinds of data, with clear and unambiguous definitions. These groups describe things, such as peope, places, locations, events and beliefs.
Finally, we create a small model bringing these together, and explore the role of using pre-existing template models whem making a recording..
At the end of this session the participant should be able to understand data, data types, data reuse, the pitfalls of data reuse and be able to draw a small data model with classes, attributes, relationships, multiplicities and data types.
