Vocabularies, lists and coded data
In this session we look at the way data is coded. We explore how real world entities, such as people, places and organisations, are described (master data) and how we use labels to classify aspects of the real world (reference data).
We start with a review of the NHS Data Model and Dictionary, a common source of data definitions. We then move to look at two classification schemes, the International Classification of Dioseases 10th edition (ICD-10) and SNOMED CT, a large multilingual terminology.
We explore how multiple codes can be used to represent real world concepts through an exercise looking at menus for coffee and extend that to ICD-10 and SNOMED CT – coordination.
Finally,we consider how we can use detailed data to group things into broad categories with the Healthcare Resource Groups.
